TOO FAR
Every October, FPR Speed hosts the highly anticipated XC Hay Bale Race where over 1,300 athletes from across Texas gather to compete. It’s a big event, drawing participants of all ages, including local elementary school students who are recruited by their coaches to get a taste of the sport and experience the thrill of long-distance running.
As the race day approached, one of the coaches asked one of his 3rd grade athletes, “Do you want to run in the FPR cross-country race next month?”
The response was immediate—and emphatic:
“NO!”
The coach, surprised by the strong reaction, tried to reason with the young runner. “Really? This is a cool opportunity! Only the fastest 3rd graders get chosen. Why don’t you want to do it?”
“Because it’s all the way across the country. That’s too far!”
